Investigators have identified the driver and passenger who were killed early on Sunday, Nov. 10 in the area of North Shore Drive and Charter Oak Tree in Reston when their Ford Explorer went off the roadway and struck a tree.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the driver, Herndon resident Shawn Ballard, 35, and passenger Nicole Hamm, 48, of Reston, were both taken to an area hospital, where they were later pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.

Preliminarily, detectives believe speed was a factor, and are working to determine whether or not alcohol was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation days later.
